Sci-Fi Meets Big Bucks

The new Doctor Who starring Christopher Eccleston (the Doctor) and Billie Piper (his sidekick Rose) is such a huge hit in the UK and Canada that no one will buy the rights to air it in the USA. Br-r-r-rilliant!

In the penultimate episode, the Doctor has been transported from his tardis into strange surroundings. The Doctor, to his chagrin, is the newest houseguest on Big Brother! It would seem to be a facsimilie in name (and music only) with a new house for the 2,001st century.

Rose meanwhile was beamed into a darkened studio where technicians work feverishly over a dark figure. A fellow contestant tells Rose to hurry up and get ready for the game. It slowly dawns on rose that the android host is actually an Anne-droid. It's time to play, the Weakest Link! Since Weakest Link is a BBC production (as is Doctor Who) they use the same set and graphics package...minus the pound sign. In the year 200,100, they play for credits.

The next houseguest is voted out of the house and she walks into a narrow hallway where she is...vaporized?! What kind of game is this where they play for life or death?!! The Doctor has had enough and runs into the hallway where he isn't vaporized but escapes into a dingy hallway, taking a felow contestant with him.

Back at Link, the first player is voted out. Anne-droid pronounces her as the weakest link...good-bye! Literally as the Anne-droid vaporizes the loser. Rose is horrified and realizes she too is playing for her life!

The Doctor has, by now, figured out they are in a giant space station orbiting the Earth called the Gamestation. It beams 100s of games to the planet below...there are 10 levels of Big Brother houses in the 500-level gamestation. Other games include Call My Bluff with real guns, Countdown gives you 30 seconds to defuse a bomb, Ground Force (you get turned into compost), Wipeout, Stars in Their Eyes (if you don't sing, you get blinded)...all this and more in a 10,000 channel universe!

Back to the Weakest Link and it's down to Rose and Roddick who beats her in the best-of-five final. The Doctor bursts into the studio...Rose runs to the Doctor...Anne-droid proclaims her to be the weakest link...and the Doctor's beloved Rose is gone!

I grant you that more happened in the episode. But I leave you with these questions...Was Rose really vaporized? What is the real purpose of the gamestation? Can the Doctor solve the riddle of the game controller? I won't give any of that away but I will say that the Anne-droid redeems itself somewhat in the finale.
